Student Awards

Lakeville South alumnus Alex Ingalls has been named the National High School Student Production Award winner in the category of Photographer for a video he created. Ingalls was announced a national winner via a live web stream hosted by Tom Bergeron, host of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars”. Lakeville South alumnus Nate O’Meara was also nominated as a finalist in the Commercial category. The students’ advisers were Jim CecilTyler Krebs and Derek Otten. The NATAS National High School Student Production Awards recognize outstanding achievement in video production. Ingalls and O’Meara were selected from over 2,000 high school student entries across the country in 23 programming and craft categories. Entries were judged by selected industry professionals and media academics, according to the NATAS.
Burnsville High School senior Scott Tinkham’s film, “JERRAD,” won Best Documentary and Best Cinematography at the EDU Film Festival, the premier Minnesota film event for high school students at the ShowPlace ICON Theater in St. Louis Park.  “‘JERRAD’ is about a kid with cerebral palsy,” said Scott. “It is about him overcoming his limitations, and not letting his disability define who he is.” Scott said he capitalizes all the letters in the title “JERRAD” because it’s a story that can apply to anyone in their own walks of life, not just Jerrad. Scott has earned three NATAS-Upper Midwest Region Student Video Production Awards for his video productions in the past two years and will study film production at the University of Arizona next year. There was an article on about Sight Without Eyes: A Story of Inclusion by Trey Woedel in the Minneapolis Education Examiner. It seems bullying is on everybody’s mind these days. There are bullying task forces, bullying newsletters, national bullying reporting agencies, and training sessions set up by the Minnesota Department of Education to illuminate the problem for teachers and parents.
Four Burnsville High School broadcasting students were recognized by the Minnesota High School Press Association for scholastic achievement and excellence in high school journalism. Junior Nikki Rykhus was given a North Star Journalist Award for maintaining a 3.75 GPA or higher in a leadership role for Burnsville High School’s student-produced magazine show “Blaze Weekly.” Juniors John Kuziej, Noura Elmanssy and Cole Wilkie received Distinguished Journalist awards in recognition for having 2.75 GPAs or higher while serving in leadership roles for “Blaze Weekly.”
There was an article called Watch Out, ESPN, BHS Students Thinking Outside the Box by Alex Hall in the Savage Pacer. Burnsville High School seniors use independent study to produce a sports debate show in the Burnsville High School television studio.
There was an article called Students “Blaze” News Trail by Meryn Fluker in Savage Pacer. On Monday morning, a group of students wandered the hallways at Burnsville High School with a camera and tripod in tow. They weren’t late for class nor were they skipping; they were simply looking for cool places to plank. Meanwhile, their peers sat on stools in room E120, pitching: Black Friday? Favorite Thanksgiving memories and traditions? This is the life of a student in Tyler Krebs’ video production class. The 28 students in the section spend each week crafting the almost-six-minute newscast, from the seeds of story ideas to a fully bloomed broadcast, beamed across the airwaves each Thursday morning.
There was a video story on Video Production at Burnsville High School by Aaron Tinkleberg on the BES Website. On camera or behind it, students in the Burnsville High School video production class are learning professional-level skills before they graduate. Under the direction of teacher Tyler Krebs and with the help of Burnsville Community Television, the students have launched a weekly news television show called “Blaze Weekly.”
Eastview students Michael Ewen and Annie Burger were featured in the South Metro Film Festival.
Eastview High School broadcast and multimedia students won 6 Emmy awards and 5 honorable mention Emmy awards (out of 7 possible categories) in the Upper Midwest Region of the National Television Academy. Megan Rowley, Colleen Kiron and Michael Ewen won two Emmy awards (for best documentary and best news story) for pieces on the Dakota Hawks adapted soccer team. Annie Burger won an Emmy in the PSA category for her piece on diversity. Mike Alger won an Emmy in sports for his story on an Eastview wrestling family. Michael Ewen won an Emmy in technical achievement for his 3d animation composite. Zach Philbrick won an Emmy in the writing category for his story on Pearl Harbor Day. Michael Ewen won honorable mention in arts and entertainment for his 3d portfolio. Aaron White, Michael Ewen and Casey Sherwin won honorable mention in the sports category for their story on losing gracefully. Michael Ewen, Aaron White, Shannon Stadther, Blake Hanson, James Jobes, and Paul Hjellming won honorable mention in technical achievement for the movie Shades of Gray. Mike Alger won honorable mention in the writing category for his story on the 10 year anniversary of Eastview. Jean Park won honorable mention in the documentary category for her piece on Bravo!
Students in The Flash and The 4Cast placed in the top 5 in six different categories, the most of any school in the country, in the Student Television Network Spring Nationals. Megan Rowley, Colleen Kiron, and Michael Ewen finished in 2nd place in the sports news category for their story on the Dakota Hawks adapted floor hockey team. Students in The Flash finished in 2nd place in the weekly show category for the edition of The Flash. Cole Trace, Joe Weise and Alec Schimke finished 3rd in the live coverage of a sporting event category for the Eastview vs. Lakeville South basketball game. Nina Moini, Alec Schimke, Casey Sherwin, Tara Smith, Scott Horvath, Megan Rowley, Brian Griepp, Ashley Kuehne, Will Malchodi, and Heidi Svien earned honorable mention in the 60 second commercial category for their piece on Eastview Singles. Students in The Flash and The 4Cast earned honorable mention for best monthly show for The Storm Watch. Students in The Flash earned honorable mention for best live show for the edition of The Flash.
23 Eastview broadcasting students (3 Flash and 20 4Cast) were recognized as All-Minnesota Editors, All-State Journalists, and Distinguished Journalists by the Minnesota High School Press Association for the school year.
Eastview seniors Colleen Kiron and Jamie Dop won 1st place at the MHSPA sports journalism contest with the Minnesota Wild. They attended a Wild practice and interviewed Mark Parrish. Their winning video appeared on the Wild website.
Michael Ewen and James Jobes placed 3rd in the editing contest, Kelsi Doran placed in the top 5 in the writing contest, and Eastview placed in the top 5 in the “Sweet 16” contest at the STN Convention in Anaheim, CA.
Flash alum Mikey Fornicoia (’02) received an Emmy Internship with FX’s television Show ‘The Shield’.
McKenna Ewen was recognized as a KARE 11 Academic All Star. 
Jeff Achen of Apple Valley Thisweek highlighted the three students who won regional Emmy awards. 
Eastview students won five regional Emmy awards and two honorable mention Emmys. McKenna Ewen won three Emmys – best news story and best arts feature for his Eastview Steppers segments. He also won the writing category for his screenplay “Shades Of Gray”. Kelsey Eliason won best public service announcement for a piece called “Religous Tolerance.” Ryan Mundahl won best sports category for his girls’ soccer highlights. Megan Groves was honorable mention with her story on the holidazzle parade and Jenny Zanatta was honorable mention for public service announcement.
27 Eastview broadcasting students (8 Flash and 19 4Cast) were recognized as All-Minnesota Editors, All-State Journalists, and Distinguished Journalists by the Minnesota High School Press Association for the school year.
McKenna Ewen, Carter Stanton, Dustin Hatzenbuhler and Lisa Jobes were finalists in the Varsity Television – L’oreal “You Make the Commercial Contest.”
McKenna Ewen was one of five students nationally to receive a NSPA $1000 scholarship. The award was based on grade point average, journalism experience in high school, and future plans.
Jeff Achen of Apple Valley Thisweek highlights the quality of video production in District 196’s four high schools (Eagan, Rosemount, Eastview, and Apple Valley). 
Eastview’s Nina Moini-Zolghadr, a junior in The 4Cast, is a reporter on KARE 11’s show “Whatever”. It’s the third consecutive year that an Eastview student has been a part of the show.
Eastview’s Billy Meiklejohn competed against WCCO in the category of best commercial in the Upper Midwest Regional Emmy awards. The piece, “Bananaphone”, originally aired as credits during The Flash. It was the first time that a high school piece had ever been nominated in the history of the Emmy awards. Malorie Booth (with KARE 11’s Frank Vascellero) and McKenna Ewen (with WCCO’s Amelia Santaniello) were guest anchors at the awards ceremony.
EVTV students produced a live broadcast of Eastview’s graduation ceremony live on the Internet with the help of Cisco and TIES. 
23 Eastview broadcasting students (11 Flash and 12 4Cast) were recognized as All-Minnesota Editors, All-State Journalists, and Distinguished Journalists by the Minnesota High School Press Association for the school year.
Students at Eastview High School won two regional Emmy Awards. They won the Technical Achievement category for The Flash Holiday Show and won the Writing category for The Flash Political Show. Eastview students also received Honorable Mention awards in three other categories: Public Service for Nathan Henry’s Destruction of the Rainforest, Arts & Entertainment for William Meiklejohn’s When You Fall, and Sports for Tim Olson’s Lightning Football Highlights.
Eastview students won 2 spring nationals for the Student Televison Network in News Magazine Show for The Flash Around the Horn and in Humor for William Meiklejohn’s Bananaphone. Student also won 3 honorable mentions in Daily News Show for The 4Cast Anchorman, in Animation for Danielle Rud’s Robot Rumble, and in Original Short for William Meiklejohn’s When You Fall.
Flash students Katie Wilharm and Vivien Stender won 1st place at the MHSPA contest featuring the Minnesota Swarm.
Three Flash students were named cast members of KARE 11’s television show “Whatever” for the school year. Seniors Alex Elfner, Amanda Jagdeo, and Kristina Amata are a part of the award-winning weekly show for teenagers. The show covers everything from entertainment to sports to issues. “Whatever” airs on Saturday mornings at 10:00 a.m. Elfner has been a cast member on the show for two consecutive years.
Eastview students won a Communicator Award for The Flash Multicultural Show. 
Lucas Shanks & Mike Zanatta won 1st place in the MHSPA Gold Medallion competion (best feature story in the state of Minnesota) for their story on the Minnesota Wild.
Mike Zanatta won 1st place in the MHSPA Gold Medallion competion (best news story in the state of Minnesota) for his story on sledding.
Eastview students won a Regional Emmy Award – Honorable Mention for their holiday show. The award was presented by t Academy of Television Arts and Sciences – Upper Midwest Chapter.
Eastview students won a Videographer award for their multicultural show. The Videographer Awards is an international awards program directed by communications professionals to honor talented individuals and companies in the video production field.
14 Eastview students (8 Flash and 6 4cast) were honored by the MHSPA as Distinguished Journalists, All State Journalists, or All Minnesota Editors.
Jake Kindberg’s short film “Extreme Ways” appeared in the Nashville Film Festival. The Film screened in the Shorts Program “Youth or Consequences.”
Eight Eastview students (six in the 4cast and two in The Flash) produced videos included in the International Student Film Festival in Santa Barbara, CA.
The Flash received a Aegis Award for their mulicultural show. This accomplishment was featured in the Apple Valley Sun Current and the St. Paul Pioneer Press
Mike Zanatta and Lucas Shanks won 1st place at the MHSPA Sports Journalism Contest for the Minnesota Wild at the XCEL Engergy Center.
Nikki Rowley received a $2000 scholarship from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences – Upper Midwest Chapter
Six Eastview students (4 in The Flash and 2 in broadcast journalism) produced videos included in the International Student Film Festival in Santa Barbara, CA.
Josh Mundahl received an  Emmy Finalist Award for his Lightning Dance Team Highlights. Josh was nominated for a regional Emmy in the college non-news/entertainment division.
Nicole Newton and Nikki Rowley received 1st place, and Evan Klefsaas and Jud Turk received 2nd place in the MHSPA Sports Journalism Competitions. The groups attended a Minnesota Wild hockey practice and produced a three minute video on the experience.  The winners received tickets to a Wild game.
The Flash was featured in an article of XY: Extreme Youth. 
Josh Mundahl was named as a Telly Finalist for his Lightning Dance Team video. Telly Awards is the premier award honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions.
Metra Farrari was selected as an All State Journalist by the Minnesota High School Press Association for the school year.
Eastview High School received an Aurora Gold award for Josh Mundahl’s highlight tape of the Lightning Dance Team. The Aurora Awards is a international competition designed to recognize excellence in the film and video industries. The statues are cast in the same foundry that creates the Emmy, Oscar and Clio statues.
Jake Kindberg won an Excellence in Media Production award from the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT). An article appeared in the Apple Valley Sun Current.
Joe Filipas created a student film called Switch that was featured, along with the student film festival, in the Apple Valley Sun Current.  It was also featured in the Apple Valley Thisweek. Eastview presented its first film, video and animation festival. 
Flash student Ben Olson was interviewed for a story on Eastview seniors in an issue of Apple Valley Sun Current
Flash Alum Josh Mundahl and current Flash students Kari Zwiefel, Greg LaMere and Kristin Mundahl gained press passes to videotape President Bush’s speech at Eden Prairie High School.  An article was written in the Gustavian Weekly.

This article appeared in Access Magazine. It features The Flash and AOTV.org, the two schools currently streaming live shows on the web. 
Eastview’s Video and Multimedia programs were highlighted in an article in Bridges.com. 
This Santa Rap video, written, shot and edited by Josh Mundahl and featuring student rap group Rated R (Jordan Preston, Major Chumley III and Andy Weeden) won the Focus Enhancements’ “Thoughts and Dreams” contest in the high school non-linear division.  The prizes included $4000 in new equipment for our studio. 
KSTC (Channel 45 in Minneapolis/St. Paul) did a feature story on our show.  They visited during our Special Holiday Show. This story appeared during their 9:00 news show.
This article appeared in Wired.com.  It features AOTV.org, the show produced by our middle school friends in Carlsbad, California.  It briefly mentions The Flash in addition to their live show. 
Adrienne Rinaldi’s story on the Eastview Girls’ Swimming Team was featured at the Women With Vision Film Festival at the Walker Arts Center.
