Lakeville South junior tight end Riley Mahlman, the top-rated player in Minnesota in the Class of 2021, has made a verbal commitment to play football at the University of Wisconsin.
The 6-foot-8, 270-pound Mahlman, who projects as an offensive tackle in college, has started at tight end for the Cougars since his freshman year. He also has been a starter on the Lakeville South basketball team since his freshman year.
Lakeville South Cougars head football coach Tyler Krebs, speaking before he resigned as coach this week, described Mahlman as a rare high school talent.
“When the college coaches come and talk to me I tell them he checks off all the boxes,” Krebs said prior to Mahlman announcing his choice. “If I could give them a negative I would. He’s a leader, his teammates love him, he’s humble, he’s unselfish, he’s a hard worker, he’s competitive, he loves the weight room, he’s physical, he plays with a chip on his shoulder. I could keep going down the list.”
Mahlman received offers from six other schools: Minnesota, Iowa, Iowa State, Michigan State, Nebraska and Ohio State.
Mahlman has verbally committed to Wisconsin more than a year before he can sign a National Letter of Intent. Football players in the Class of 2021 can sign as early as December 2020.
